Creative dating program offers relationship advice to students

When you’re sick, you go to the doctor. When you need a date? Try the doctor again.

The dating doctor, that is.

David Coleman, also known as the dating doctor, is scheduled to perform his Creative Dating program at 7:30 p.m. today in the Schofield Auditorium .

Coleman has been traveling, both nationally and internationally, for the past 14 to 15 years performing his Creative Dating program, said Diane Coleman, his wife.

David Coleman’s lectures encourage a positive focus on relationships. He wants people to develop healthy relationships and stay out of unhealthy ones, Diane Coleman said.

“He really puts a positive focus on dating,” she said, “telling you what you should do, not what you shouldn’t do.”

To gain knowledge of dating and relationships, David Coleman relies on research and life experience. He has gained much of his life experience from working with people either while giving his talks or through the 20 to 50 e-mails that he receives a day asking for dating advice.

David Coleman also shares his own views on dating and relationships, as he has seen it in his own marriage during the past 15 years.

In addition to personal experience, many of his ideas have come from research, most of which can be found in his book “Date Smart.”

This is not the first time David Coleman has visited the Eau Claire campus. He performed his program at Eau Claire for the first time in September 1998.

The university was so impressed it decided to bring him back, said Paula Steuttgen, senior coordinator of student development and programs.

Steuttgen said that David Coleman’s program is a lecture/brainstorming type of thing.

“Just in case you crash and burn on Valentine’s Day, this is a recovery thing,” Steuttgen said.

David Coleman’s Creative Dating program is free and is part of this week’s Winter Carnival special events.
