Job fair promotes service

Community Action Day, a gathering of community organizations in search of volunteer help, is scheduled to take place Thursday.

The event features a job-fair atmosphere in which students can meet with representatives and discuss volunteering.

Since it began in 1974, Community Action Day has offered students a chance to get involved in the community.

It is held on the second Thursday of each semester, and several organizations, such as the Special Olympics and the Eau Claire Jaycees will be on hand to discuss various volunteer opportunities with students.

Community Action Day is a chance for students to start working toward the University’s service-learning requirement as well.

The number of organizations on hand gives students a large variety of volunteering options, including tutoring, mentoring and constructing.

“The service-learning requirement is designed to do one of two things,” said Paula Stuettgen, student development coordinator. “Either you can earn credit for something you are already doing for others, or you get a chance to do something for the community and feel good about doing it.

“Community Action Day is a good place to start when working towards that requirement,” she said.

Senior Adam Mohr saw the benefits of service-learning.

“(Doing community service) made me feel good about myself,” he said.

Mohr added that his service was beneficial to the organization for which he worked.

Although the fall semester typically has a larger turnout, volunteers are needed all year long.

Anyone interested should stop by between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m Thursday in the Council Fire Room on the second floor of Davies Center.
