Young team aims for the net

After the Blue and Gold game last weekend the men’s basketball team is hoping to take it all the way this season, sophomore Jared Bardon said.

“We are looking for that conference championship and a chance to go to the playoffs,” he said.

During the Blue and Gold competition the Blue team beat the Gold team 61-54.

The team lost three starters from last season, so the guys are hoping they will get some tough guys to come in and step up, Bardon said.

“I think that our recruits are going to be vital in this year’s squad,” he said.

With the team being so young, there is a lot of room for growth and improvement for the team, sophomore Dan Beyer said.

“One of our strengths this year is probably on the defensive end,” he said. “We are really concentrating on giving opposing teams a tough time scoring.”

The team plays its first official game at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 against Coe College (Iowa) and 7 p.m. on Nov. 19 against Buena Vista (Iowa). Both games will be held at Zorn Arena.

The team is hoping to come away with some wins to start the season, Bardon said.

“The games versus Coe College and Buena Vista should be very successful for us, in that we get our first two games with a young team,” he said.

Beyer said the team also hopes for a good fan turnout.

“The more fans the better,” he said.

The team will be well prepared for the games against Coe College and Buena Vista, despite the fact they’re a younger team, he said.

“This year we are going to have a young team, but I think we are going to surprise some people,” junior Luke Meier said. “If we play together and up to our abilities, we can win a lot of games this year.”
