Men’s tennis splits season opener

In its season opening weekend, the Eau Claire men’s tennis team slated its record at 1-1.

After defeating Augustana College (S.D.) 6-1, the Blugolds went scoreless against the reigning North Central Conference champions, St. Cloud State (Minn.) 9-0.

In the ‘Golds match-up against Augustana, the singles players won five of six matches and the three doubles teams went undefeated.

In No. 1 singles, senior Matt Widder topped Augustana’s James Shanor 6-1, 6-2.

Widder lost both sets in his game against St. Cloud State’s Bryan Baumann 6-4, 6-4.

Freshman Jeff Peterson came close to delivering a win for the Blugolds against St. Cloud at No. 5 singles; however, he lost 7-5, 7-6.

The Blugolds will travel to Oakdale, Minn, Friday to play Bethel College (Minn.) at 3 p.m.
