Weird science

Tuesday, Nov. 22

At 4:56 p.m., a custodian reported that a large metal tank was leaking on the fourth floor of Phillips Hall. He also reported a smell in the area. He believed the tank was labeled nitrogen, but he wasn’t sure. The officer requested that the custodian and anyone else in the area leave the building. When he arrived at Phillips, the officer met with the custodian and confirmed that the tank was labeled as containing nitrogen.

The fire department arrived soon after and shut off the leaking valve at the top of the tank, which was connected to the capacity gauge. The fire department believed there was no danger because the oxygen levels in the hallway had not been depleted, but they recommended opening any windows in the area to make sure.

The officer contacted a representative at loss prevention and safety, who said he would be in Wednesday morning to notify the chemical stockroom and the tank’s vendor of the leak.

Suspicious minds

Sunday, Nov. 20

At 5:05 p.m., university police received an anonymous complaint of a man picking up cigarette butts and begging for money outside Towers Hall North. The complainant said the man was wearing black pants and a black hooded sweatshirt and had a mustache. He was last seen outside Towers walking toward Garfield Avenue. When an officer arrived on the scene he was unable to locate the subject.
