Re-victimizing one click at a time: Did they want you to see that?

Last week nude images of female celebrities were stolen and posted publicly. This week a video of Ray Rice knocking his then-fiancé Janay unconscious in a casino elevator circulated around social media courtesy of TMZ.

We have no business viewing these violations of privacy. The nude images were not intended for my eyes. The elevator security camera footage was not needed to prove the assault happened. You do not have consent to intrude on the personal lives of any of these women.

Lena Dunham, actress, screenwriter and director, tweeted about the theft of the nude images, “Remember when you look at these pictures you are violating these women again and again,” the tweet read. “It is not okay.”

There is a lack of concern for the women involved. The release of the video is damaging to Janay Rice.  Every time someone watches the video, she will relive the blow that knocked her unconscious. Janay said her life has turned into a nightmare after the release of the video that prompted the indefinite suspension of her husband from the NFL.

“I woke up this morning feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I’m mourning the death of my closest friend,” Janay Rice said in a statement on Instagram Tuesday. “No one knows the pain that the media and unwanted options from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing.”

The females who were involved in the nude image theft have to walk around knowing there are nude images of them circulating without their permission. The release of the private images should be treated as a crime and all images should be pulled from the Internet.

“Do not be part of this abuse,” Independent’s Lucy Hunter Johnson noted to the Washington Post. “Do not click on these pictures.”

All I can suggest is to avoid violating these women any more than they already have been. Quit clicking on the nude images and refrain from watching the grainy footage of Janay being knocked unconscious.
