This is your news

There was a lot of news this summer.

From a hurricane to earthquakes, recalls to revolutions, political battles to pitching duels, the world kept moving, even as we were working our summer jobs and catching up on sleep.

Now that we’re back on campus the news will continue to happen and we here at The Spectator will help you to find it, decipher it and figure out what it means for you.

As a student newspaper, our goal is to provide news coverage, feature articles, sports reporting and editorial opinions tailored to and by students like you. This is something you might not always have.

Once you graduate, although the news will still be rolling in, you may not have the opportunity to pick up a paper and see the things that affect and interest you or voice your opinion for your peers.

So, now’s your chance to not just read the news, but actively participate in it and The Spectator is here to help.

First and foremost, let us know what you’re interested in. The variety of majors and organizations at this university is a testament to the diversity in passions, culture and hobbies of the student body. The more we know about you, the better we’ll be at finding the stories that matter.

You can always suggest stories or let us know about things happening on campus by sending us an e-mail or filling out the form at the top of ourwebsite. Or, feel free to stop into our office, 104 Hibbard Hall, to tell us what you want to see in the next issue.

We’d also love to hear your opinions on what we’re writing about. You can comment on stories posted online or connect with us on Facebook and Twitter to let us, and the campus as a whole, know how you feel.

If you’re a bit more long-winded, contribute to our editorial section or write us a letter to the editor. We strive to have a diverse set of opinions every week to make sure all students are represented, and writing for us is a way to make that happen.

Probably most importantly, please let us know how we’re doing. We can’t become better if we don’t know what we’re doing wrong, so don’t hesitate to critique us and help us succeed in making this paper yours.

If you can think of any other ways we can make our newspaper and website cater to you, please let us know.

Finally, one of the best ways for you to make The Spectator great is to continue doing great work. The stories we love to write are those about students making waves in and out of their field and on and off campus. While our Student Life section (see page 6B) highlights some of those students each week, you’ll see many more names and faces among the articles in every section.

This newspaper is yours, and, for the limited time you’re here, use The Spectator as a source of information, a forum for debate, or a place to air
your opinions.

Because the world will keep moving, and, one of these semesters, you’ll go with it.

Thom Fountain is a senior liberal studies major and the Editor in Chief of The Spectator.
