Senior Andy Miller and junior Andy Johnston didn't drop a match all day, but their spotless performances weren't enough to lift the UW-Eau Claire wrestling team over any of its three opponents Saturday afternoon.
The Blugolds tumbled to a trio of losses this weekend in the team's season-opening action in Sheboygan. The Blugolds fell to host Lakeland College 26-21 before dropping to St. John's University (Minn.) 36-7 and UW-Parkside 31-19.
Miller and Johnston were the only wrestlers to go 3-0 on the day. Miller made short work of his 133-pound Lakeland opponent, recording a pin in just 1:52. The senior from Appleton continued with an 8-5 win over St. John's, and followed that victory with a pin in just over two minutes against Parkside.
Johnston opened his series of 149-pound matches with a 7-3 win over Lakeland, and followed up with a 12-3 win over St. John's and a 9-1 victory over Parkside.
Senior Josh Holforty scored a pair of victories against his 197-pound Lakeland and Parkside opponents, but stumbled to a 6-5 loss against St. John's. The Bloomington, Minn. native, who recorded a 26-6 record last season, scored a victory by disqualification against Lakeland and beat his Parkside opponent 3-2.
Freshmen Keith Dawson and Jacob Jones each recorded a lone victory against Lakeland to help bring up Eau Claire's record. Dawson defeated his opponent 5-4 in the 174-pound weight class, and Jones won 6-3 in the 184-pound class. Senior heavyweight Mark Frick took his lone win of the day with a two-minute pin against his Parkside opponent.
Eau Claire went 18-22 overall last season and 6-8 in dual matches, and finished fifth of seven in the WIAC championship tournament. The team will play again Saturday at the Augsburg Open in Minneapolis.
