The award-winning Jazz Ensembles I and II performed in a packed Zorn Arena in the annual Big Band Era Concerts at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
Making the event more notable was the guest appearance of 1987 Eau Claire graduate Michael Andrew.
Andrew, who graduated with a degree in theatre and communication arts, has appeared in movies and performed on stages across the country throughout his career. He is currently developing a Broadway musical with Jerry Lewis, but took time out of his schedule to sing in this year's event.
"I'm really excited," Andrew said before the performance, adding that "it was a blast" working with the students.
This isn't the first time Andrew has contributed to the Eau Claire music program. In 1999, he lent his talents as a guest performer for the Big Band Era Concert and is currently working with the jazz ensembles to record a Christmas CD for release later this year.
"Michael Andrew is just a pure pro," said Robert Baca, director of jazz studies and professor of music. "Excellence is his daily routine."
But Baca and Andrew applauded the efforts and talents of the student musicians. Many of the students specialize in more than one instrument and were able to prepare for the concert in only two weeks.
This concert was put together in only three or four rehearsals, Baca said, adding that the students were rehearsing until about 2:30 a.m. Friday.
But the late rehearsals and limited amount of preparation didn't stop the students from having a good time.
"I feel like (the performance) went great," said freshman AaronHedenstrom, who plays the alto saxophone in one of the jazz ensembles.
