Tomah Mayor Ed Thompson came to UW-Eau Claire Thursday to sign a "taxpayer protection pledge," which is essentially a vow not to raise taxes in Wisconsin. Thompson is running for the 31st district of the Wisconsin State Senate, a district including part of the Eau Claire area.

International students help Haiti

Fundraiser combined food, music, dancing to raise money for disaster

Even though the earthquake in Haiti occurred two months ago, fundraisers are still appearing around campus, including one held Friday night in Towers Commons ... The fundraiser included food, music, swing and salsa dancing lessons, traditional folk dancing and calligraphy. The Association of International Students, Towers Hall Council, Two to Tango, Salsa Clara, Malaysians Abroad Diversified and the German Club sponsored the event.

New executive position to be filled

Search already underway, people from all over to be considered

UW-Eau Claire has found a need for a new executive position, and a panel has already begun its search to fill the opening. Beth Hellwig, who currently holds the title of vice chancellor for student affairs/dean of students, will have her position split in two, and she will only hold the title of vice chancellor for student affairs. Dean of students will then become its own position.

Biology students to study rice paddies in Cambodia

Study includes fish populations, ecosystems, effects of agricultural methods

Ludvik and four other UW-Eau Claire students and a biology faculty member will spend this summer in Cambodia studying how the use of agrochemicals in rice paddies is affecting the country's ecosystem. The team will leave the U.S. on July 9 and return on Aug. 14.

AMA spreads word about need for organ donors with videos

Commitments to the renewal of life needed, group's relations director says

The AMASL site asserts that each of these numbers can be curbed with one person - a single organ donor can save up to eight lives. The UW-Eau Claire chapter of AMA is determined to reach out to students to make this need known through the AMA Saves Lives project.

Student Senate proposes guidelines

Resolution suggests policy change for differential tuition

Student Senate passed a resolution on Monday recommending changes to the Board of Regents' policy on differential tuition initiatives. The resolution was similar to one that was recently passed by UW-La Crosse and to ones being worked on by other UW System schools. They have all come in response to UW-Eau Claire's recent differential tuition increase and the lack of guidelines that were required throughout the process.
