The UW-Eau Claire football team defeated Bethel University (Tenn.) 21-7 Saturday night at Carson Park to win its season opener. Eau Claire came out hot early, scoring a touchdown inside the first four minutes and scoring again less than five minutes later to take an early 14-0 lead.

For the UW-Eau Claire women's golf team, the preparation for the 2009 season was a bit unusual. Sophomore Katie Maurer said the team played quite a few times before the start of the season in order to get better and more used to course management, along with getting used to competing with other people.

Runners always know the importance of starting early. With that in mind the Blugold Cross Country training camp commenced long before the first futons and microwaves were lugged into Towers Hall. In November 2008 the UW-Eau Claire volleyball team found itself tied at 24 in a must-win game 4 of the NCAA championship tournament against St. Benedict (Minn.). Since games must be won by two or more points, the game didn't come to an end until St. Benedict outlasted the Blugolds, 28-26.

Going streaking

With many new faces on the women's soccer team this year, it will be hard to improve on last year's 18-2-4 record. However, that doesn't mean Head Coach Sean Yengo and his team plan on taking this season off. "They picked us to win (the conference)," Yengo said.

The UW-Eau Claire football team is predicted to finish third in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) for a second straight season, according to a preseason sports information directors' poll. UW-Whitewater was selected to finish first in the conference and UW-Stevens Point was tabbed to take second, according to the poll.
