Groups offered aid amid financial crisis

The Women and Gender Equity Center, staring down the barrel of an impending financial crisis this year, got a bit of a lifeline thrown its way on Monday. The center could see its money pot dry up soon after WAGE missed a deadline last semester to turn in paperwork to receive funding through Student Senate.

July 1 marked the first day of Eau Claire's citywide smoking ban. Not even three months later, people are taking action against it - most notably the Tavern League of Wisconsin. Eau Claire County's Tavern League President Sally Jo Birtzer said city businesses are at an average of 35 to 45 percent loss since the start of the smoking ban.

Lots of windows, plenty of seating, "warm" colors and an emphasis on green initiatives were what Student Senate members said they want in the university's future student center. Senate held a special meeting Monday night with representatives from Bray/Burt Hill, the engineering firm hired to draw up plans for the ongoing Davies Center remodeling project.
