Wisconsin's legislators in Washington expect the president to sign a bill this week that will provide the single largest investment in higher education since the 1944 GI bill, giving about 70,000 Wisconsin college students a boost in federal financial aid.

When UW-Eau Claire sophomore Andy Anhalt bought food Sept. 9 at the Hilltop Center Food Court on Upper Campus, he said he noticed something was missing - seven meals on his 14-meal plan, to be exact. "I had used a double transfer, and it said I had five meals left," Anhalt said.

Italy, Greece - and a performance for the Pope. The Blugold Marching Band, accompanied by Color Guard, will experience all these as it takes a trip overseas this winter. New Year's Day marks the big day for the marching band, when it will perform for the Pope's papal blessing.

Chemistry professor gets grant

One UW-Eau Claire chemistry professor's e-mail inbox is filled with "congratulations" and "well done" messages. That's because David Lewis received $65,000 to research and develop a new derivative of the drug Warfarin, the most widely prescribed oral anticoagulant, which prevents blood from clotting.

From soda to vanilla soy milk; from hot dogs to fresh natural oranges, pears and tomatoes; the Corner Store in Davies Center has gone all organic and natural. "The kids asked for it," said Gerri Kolve, a worker at the Corner Store. She has worked there for more than a year now and has seen the major change the store has gone through.

Clean Commute Initiative aims to increase use of alternate forms of transportation

What started as a group of professors chatting in the hallways last spring has blossomed into an initiative signed by 186 faculty and staff members The "Clean Commute Initiative," sent Sept. 4 to UW-Eau Claire's administrators as well as various city departments, encourages alternative methods of transportation to and from campus.
