College Republicans use event to protest holistic admissions policy

In the aftermath of the UW Board of Regents' unanimous approval of its admissions policy Feb. 9, some state lawmakers have vowed to keep the issue alive - an issue which has now sparked controversy among students themselves. On Monday, members of UW-Eau Claire's College Republicans held a bake sale in protest of the new policy, charging customers different prices based on their race in order to bring attention to what they called an unfair policy and an attempt to force diversity upon the university.

In little more than a month since gaining power, Democrats on Capitol Hill have been working hard to change the direction of national policy, U.S. Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., said Tuesday morning during a visit to UW-Eau Claire. At a listening session in the President's Room of Davies Center, the new chairman of the House Appropriations Committee spoke to about 20 people about the transition of power within both houses of the nation's legislature and outlined several new budget priorities.

In an attempt to understand the alcohol and drug use of UW students, the UW System will randomly invite students to participate in a Web-based survey this weekend, said Peggy O'Halloran, director for UW-Eau Claire's Center for Alcohol Studies and Education.

Lenient rules about alcohol served at student-sponsored events sparks concern

A new alcohol policy at UW-Madison has many Madison students up in arms because of its strict new rules. It also has administrators at UW-Eau Claire examining Eau Claire's alcohol policies. Some of the new rules include not allowing alcohol at student-sponsored events unless everyone present is 21 or older, requiring food to be served and requiring that non-alcoholic drinks besides water be available at a cheaper purchase price than alcoholic beverages, according to the policy.

Recent temps prompt resolution

On Feb. 5, students at UW-Eau Claire woke up to wind chill temperatures of minus 46 degrees. While most schools in the Eau Claire area were closed, university classes went on as scheduled. Two weeks later, Student Senate debated and passed a resolution Monday regarding extreme and hazardous weather.

A guest speaker inspired education students Tuesday with his speech on how one's philosophy of life will shape teaching style at the annual Martin Mogensen Education Lecture sponsored by the College of Education and Human Sciences. John Perricone is an educator and the author of "Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching."
