Student Senate tickets present views on RA Bible Study, Putnam Park

The three tickets vying for Student Senate president and vice president in next week's election faced off Wednesday to an almost-full house in The Cabin of Davies Center. Presidential and vice presidential candidates Sarah Coyer and Brady Johnson; Avril Flaten and Jon Radcliffe; and Christopher Wagner and Chris Nielson took the stage in an hour-long debate, moderated by current Student Senate President Aaron Olson.

The Center for Alcohol Studies and Education want to make an online drinking program mandatory for UW-Eau Claire students. Check-up to Go, or "e-CHUG," consists of a short survey for students to share their drinking habits, as well as a feedback section with suggestions about how to drink in moderation.

Although the state Legislature recently approved a 5 percent pay plan increase for UW-Eau Claire faculty over the next two years, the salary hike likely will not be enough to lure necessary replacement faculty in the next 10 years, said Vice Chancellor of Business and Student Services Andy Soll.

Residents concerned about higher education costs, accessibility

A survey recently conducted by Wood Communications Group, of Madison, showed Wisconsin residents are concerned about the UW System. It was comprised of 600 adults, who were randomly chosen from around the state and telephoned for the survey. The survey itself took about four days to complete and was funded completely by Wood Communications Group, spokesman Howard Cosgrove said.

Bible study passes State Legislature

The ruling on the Resident Assistant Bible study controversy was passed yesterday by the Wisconsin State Legislature, Representative Rob Kreibich, R-Eau Claire, said. The ruling will be adopted by the Board of Regents and will allow RAs to conduct Bible studies in their dorm rooms, or anywhere else on campus, as long as they are voluntary, he said.

Truck driver to stand trial

District attorney adds eight charges, upgrades two counts

The driver of the semi-truck involved in the Oct. 16 Chippewa Falls Marching Band bus crash that killed five people, including UW-Eau Claire senior Branden Atherton, now faces an additional eight charges. Michael J. Kozlowski, 23, of Schererville, Ind., appeared in Eau Claire County Circuit Court for a preliminary hearing before his arraignment on Friday.

Senate debates park plan

Resolution to oppose parking lot demolition voted down

After a debate lasting almost two-and-a-half hours, Student Senate voted, 10-12-3, against a resolution to oppose a plan that would turn the Putnam Hall parking lot into a park. With the support of 11 fellow students, Putnam Hall Council President Jordan Benedict and Putnam RA Eric Highlander voiced their concerns regarding the issue.
