Student owns solicitation corporation charged with misleading customers

The UW-Eau Claire junior who faces criminal racketeering charges was the owner and operator of Community Support Inc., one of the solicitation entities authorities say deceived out-of-state donors.
Steven J. Ranta, 27, of Altoona is one of eight individuals facing criminal charges in Eau Claire County for using "deceptive telephone solicitations" to raise money for "questionable charities," according to a press release from the attorney general's office.
Family members remember sophomore's sense of humor, dedication to computer science major

Brian Gerber was known for his unique sense of humor and always making people laugh, said his father Don Gerber.
"He was very humorous, very funny," he said. "He always had a smirk on his face."
Brian Gerber, 22, died in his apartment Saturday. He was a third-year student with sophomore standing majoring in computer science.
Boyum says he regrets his actions, always had helpful intentions

A retired UW-Eau Claire counselor recently was sanctioned by the state for inappropriate comments he made toward female students during his employment at the university.
The Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing ruled on Jan. 31 that Dick Boyum, a former counselor with Eau Claire's counseling services, would not be able to renew his professional counselor license until July 2 because of the complaints of six Eau Claire women over a 13-year period.

University Senate's Physical Plant Planning Committee proposed at the Jan. 31 Senate meeting turning the lot's 37 parking spots into "a multi-use park entrance for individuals, small groups and an outdoor classroom."

Senate requests formation of committee to review 'Blugold'

After about 30 minutes of discussion, Student Senate voted 20-4-2 Monday in favor of a resolution recommending the chancellor form a committee to review the need for redefining a Blugold.
