Service-Learning proposal approved

Ban on religious proselytization projects stands, no restrictions on political projects

University Senate Tuesday approved the new Service-Learning proposal as amended at its previous meeting, finalizing its decision to retain the ban on projects involving religious proselytization, while eliminating restrictions on partisan political activity.

Eau Claire community members are divided after a local high school teacher showed photographs of transgendered UW-Eau Claire senior Jessica Janiuk's face as part of a discussion about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people. On April 14, Memorial High School English teacher Beth Franklin showed classes photos of Janiuk's face before and after (see photo) her sex change.

Geology professor Bob Hooper responded in one word when asked what his feelings were after hearing he was selected as chair of the screen-and-search committee for a new chancellor at UW-Eau Claire. "When you've got so many other things going on in your life, it is a little bit scary," said Hooper, who, among other things, also serves on University Senate and as the geology department chair.

As many students anxiously finish final projects and study for exams, Student Senate looked to the future Monday night as it considered the ramifications of tying UW System two-year colleges to the System's four-year universities. Senate decided that such a connection would be detrimental.
