District 3 candidates debate Wednesday during final push before City Council elections

Downtown revitalization, conditional use permits and minimum wage all took center stage as issues discussed by the two candidates for Eau Claire's District 3 City Council seat in a debate Wednesday afternoon in Schofield Auditorium. Incumbent Toby Biegel and challenger Adrian Klenz faced off to a crowd of nearly 20 students, faculty and community members.

Loans, grants might be cut under current budget proposals

Senior Emilie Rabbitt will graduate in August with a degree in economics. She plans to live in New Jersey, working for a non-profit agency dealing with water quality. However, Rabbitt will take a bit of UW-Eau Claire with her - about $22,000 in student loans.

Chippewa River nears flood stage

The Chippewa River was at a 769.67-foot elevation at 2:15 p.m. Friday, which is three feet below the flood stage of 773 feet. The river was expected to crest at an elevation of 770.5 feet over the weekend and was not expected to cause major flooding. The Chippewa River Trail currently is closed behind the Haas Fine Arts Center, between Seventh Avenue and the Hobbs Boat landing and under the Lake Street bridge.

In his State of the University Address, outgoing Student Senate President Chad Wade encouraged students to engage their Senate - a body that he said wields considerable control over the budget and other policy issues, compared to organizations at most universities.

Senior Bridget Prokop found herself standing over an outdoor display of authentic native Southwestern jewelry and art in Santa Fe, New Mexico over spring break. In the morning, the American Indians would set up their booth in the portal of the Palace of the Governors, near the plaza in downtown Santa Fe, Prokop said.

April elections typically lack voters

Despite historically dismal voter turnout statistics for April elections, City Council President Howard White said it's important for students to vote in Tuesday's election. "There's going to be so many issues that affect students in the next (City Council) term," he said.
