Seven Eau Claire City Council hopefuls dispute pressing issues

With the April 5 general election less than three weeks away, seven of eight Eau Claire City Council candidates and both candidates for Council president gathered for a forum Tuesday night at DeLong Middle School, 2000 Vine St. Five predetermined questions were given to the candidates prior to the forum.

The U.S. news media shirked their responsibility in their coverage of the war in Iraq, political activist John Stauber told students, faculty and community members Sunday night in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. "The war in Iraq would have been absolutely impossible to sell to the American public without lies, deception and a massive propaganda campaign," said Stauber, executive director of the Center for Media and Democracy in Madison and founder of quarterly online publication PR Watch.

For sophomore Renee Ewings, gas prices are a weekly concern. Ewings, a mother and commuting student, drives a minivan to transport all of her children. She also uses her vehicle to drive to UW-Eau Claire from her home in Cornell, which is about 40 miles from Eau Claire.

The audience gasped when National Geographic photographer Jodi Cobb's images of beauty pageant girls appeared on the screen. These girls, ranging from only a few years old to about nine years old, had glamorous hairstyles and outfits that cost thousands of dollars, Cobb said.

Instead of taking time to go fishing or enjoy some much-needed relaxation, Craig Carlson has decided to spend a portion of his retired life helping the students of UW-Eau Claire. Carlson currently volunteers at Career Services from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays as a retired executive director of the Eau Claire Area Economic Development Corporation, said Director of Career Services Jeanne Skoug.

UW-Eau Claire students who are assertive, responsible and dedicated to effecting change in the UW System should consider applying for the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, said current student regent Beth Richlen. Richlen's two-year term as student regent ends in May.

Senate amends bylaws

Body discusses funding guidelines, Health Services, election process

The 49th session of Student Senate got down to business Monday by amending Finance Commission bylaws on regulations for organized activity funding, following a lengthy debate. After questions were raised about the funding of The Flip Side during the 48th session members of the Finance Commission drafted legislation to amend the bylaws to specifically spell out which organizations could be approved for funding through student segregated fees.

Phi Alpha collects dresses

Honor society organizes donation for high school prom

It's spring again, and that means prom for high school students. However, the costs of shoes, tickets, dresses and dinner can put prom out of the price range of many high school students. Phi Alpha, a social work honor society, is organizing Cinderella's Closet, a project to provide prom dresses for high school students who can't afford them, said senior Liz Bode, a Phi Alpha member.
