As far as I belive this habit of mine started while I was at class 12.After the ceremony of Bratabadn(one of the Hindu rituals) I had my head shaved but the real problem was with the pony which accourding to ritual I had to had. Then, the real problem started .So ,after that I would twirl my pony while I was reading and doing other studff that needed some type of concentration. And now it's been like more than 8 years that this habit has stuck into me.What I noticed with this was that when I would have my hair very short it will stop for about a month or so but again it will start again when the length of the hair becomes enough so that I can twirl it.It was not long enought that this habit of mine looks so disgusting until I saw a gilr in one of my class was twirling her hair for the whole class period. This led to me believe that I wouyld have certainly looked the same way in the class.I argued so many times with my friends and family regarding this matter and I really want to have sa stop in it now.
Who can know the real pain of yours better than me ,now I fear that this habit can stop me from succeeding in my life twirling hair while giving an interview will surely not look good.
Hope I will also get a help .

I twirl my hair as well. A lot of times I do it when I'm in deep thought and can appear "out of it". They diagnosed me with ADD as a kid and then as an adult it is mild Asperger's. Sometimes I rock as well. But mostly I twirl my hair a lot, especially the hair around my face or neck that tickles me and slightly annoys me at times. It's a great addiction for me and helps calm me down when I just want to be away from a lot of the noises and annoyances of the outside world. Plus, it's good because it doesn't harm anybody and really isn't that big of a deal (except maybe to superficial or small-minded people). I read an article one time that said Einstein used to twirl his hair a lot like that. Now do you feel better?

I to am a twirller. Have been since I was a baby. My mom says I use to lie in bed between her and my dad and be twirling both parents hair at the same time until I would fall asleep. I don't know if it is a fetish or what. I love the way it feels between my fingers. I am kinda of an axious person, in deep thought alot. I also twirl when I am tired or fatigued. I get distracted pretty easy as well. It is getting to the point where I think I am getting carpel tunnel in my hand. and am tieing my hair in little knots. The funny thing is My kids also twirl just not as bad as me. One of my sons use to twirl a ribbon on a stuffed animal until it was worn out. I guess it is a form of ocd maybey. But as long as it is harmless and it helps you to concentrate or relax then it's ok. Would love to hear from other twillers. Oh and by the way I just happen to be a hair dresser, go figure...

I feel like that was me writing this story! I too am a hair twirler and not sure when it started. I will have all the people around me constantly pulling my hand away from my hair! haha. Also, I do it now without even realizing it. I do it so much that I get a headache sometimes since I twirl the same section of hair all day. I wish I could stop so I dont go bald in that one spot. :0) Any tips anyone?

Well, I am happy to hear, I am not the ONLY 1! I was born twirling my hair with my left hand (and still only use my left hand), and my thumb of my right hand in my mouth. I still to this day twirl like a mad woman, especially when I'm driving. I can see people watching me, then I get embarrased, but it is ever so comforting. I will do it until my arm literally becomes numb and I have to put it down lower than I am sitting to get the blood to flow back to it. Sometimes I have to sit on my hand to try to stop myself, then 2 minutes later, there I go again. Someone once told me that hair twirling was a form of public masterbation, which actually makes a lot of sence if you think about it. I don't know if I want to quit or not, I love it so much!

As I'm sitting here reading this article, I'm twirling my hair 90 to nothing. I honestly do not see hair twirling as a problem or a bad habit. I love doing it and I'm pretty sure I will never die from twirling my hair or hurt anyone else in the process. Hair twirling is what makes me ME!! Its such a part of me and I never want to give it up. I'm 26 and have a full-time career and when my co-workers walk by my desk and see me deep in thought reading emails and I've got my hair going, of course they make comments like your hair's going to fall out or you're going to curl your hair permanently one of these days. I've heard these types of comments since day one, and it doesn't bother me at all. My elementary school teachers would threaten to put my hair up if I didn't stop playing with it! Like I said, I've never looked at it negatively. If other people find a problem with it, well then it's their problem not mine. It may be a bit juvenile, but why do we have to be in such a hurry to "grow up." I don't play with Barbie anymore and I definitely don't think boys have cooties, but I'm not giving up twirling my hair no matter what anyone says or thinks. Most of the attention I get from it is positive, and some guys find it attractive! I do not have ADD and have been very successful in life. We've all got to have that somethin'...and this is my somethin'.

OMG - i didn't realised others were addits to the same degree as me! I too have been twriling all day every day since i was about 2. I try to tie my hair up but it doesn't work. Im so embarrased about what people think of me from a professional work sense but i cant stop. I am honestly thinking of hypnosis. Im about to turn 30 and i can be in meetings with ceo's and twril my hair any longer!!

I have been twirling my hair ever since I can remember. When I drive, walking around at work,I'll even wake up in the middle of the night and do it. It's bad and I can't seem to stop. I'll stop for awhile and then start up again. I have been trying to wear headbands but I still mess with it. I can't even put my hair in a ponytail. I have long hair, but behing my ears on both sides is usually where I twirl and the hair there is like 2 inches long. And part is so short it looks bald there. My hair looks great down but I will look forward to the day I can actually put my hair up and not be self concious because of the bald spots I made. I need advice to stop, It would be great to know why also. All my friends try to help they yell at me when they see me doing it, I never realize it till I look and I've got like short hair all over my clothes. It's aggrivating.

I have twirled my hair since I was a baby. I can't stop either. Most people who know me just deal with it. I also have ADD, I often thought it was linked to that! The more intense the twirl, the more I am thinking. The lazier the twirl, I'm tired. I even twirl my cats tails, when they let me. If I'm trying to be incognito, I twirl a small piece of hair at the nape of my neck, and pretend I'm just rubbing my neck or something. If that's not enought, I tend to suck on my tongue while doing all this. I must look so glamourous! LOL I've never met anyone as intense a hair twirler as me... so glad their are a few of us out there. We should form a support group. :)

I've twirled my hair all my life too. Always on the crown of my head where that little hair-swirl/part thing is. My parents used to constantly tell at me to stop, but I couldn't break the habit. Being a boy, I can only do it when my hair gets a little longer. When I keep it short and I can't twirl, I can't say I think about it all the time or anything, but as soon as I grow it out a little, I get hooked again. I find it very relaxing, except my arm gets tired holding it up sometimes.

I always thought I was the only one that did this... until now I see I'm not alone.

I have another bad habit. I don't twirl my hair, but I do snap my fingers quite often. I'm trying to quit that too, but if I do not do it from time to time I feel very bad and after I do it, a wave of relaxation goes through my body.

I have had this problem on and off for 15 years. When I am "on" it can be very comforting to me. But it doesn't take long to start feeling pain in my fingers and wrist. I've become concerned with getting a repetitive stress injury. Once it was so bad I had to stop typing with my left hand for a week then give my right hand a rest and type with the left for a week. It was very painful. Letting this get out of control can have effects, I think.

Me too! My mom is always slapping my hand away from my hair if I do it in public. It is funny how its contagious, people always start doing it around me. I do wish I had the control to make it stop though because I really do feel like I look like an idiot sometimes...do you guys think it has to do with ADD? I've been wondering if I have it for a while.

I too am a hair twirler. My co-workers poke fun at me beacuse I do it all day long. I told them you would have to cut off my hands in order for me to stop lol! I probably started when I was around 6 or 8 years old, I saw my older cousin doing it and picked up on her habit. It is nice to know there are other hair twilers out there. I don't think I will ever stop...and why not? I find it relaxing and enjoyable! So to all you hair twilers out there...Go For It!!!

I'm 43 and still twirling strong. My wrists get tired and that's the only reason I stop. I try and be aware when I do it, but the point is mute. I'm sure it agitates other people. I am very interested in a conversation that I am having with someone, but they can't help but keep looking at my hair as I twirl it. It's probably a distraction to them. I twirl my hair in all moods so there isn't really any 'reason', of course pple try and pigeon hole twirlers as anxious, agitated people. I think a meet n greet of hard core twirlers would be hilarious!!

i have been twirling my hair since i can remember. my family says that i have been doing it basically since i have had hair. I as well don't even realize I am doing it half of the time. I am in the Army and my hair always has to be up in a bun with no loose hair coming out of it. lol the first thing that i find myself doing when i get home is taking my hair down and twirling away while doing whatever it is that i am doing. i don't think it's some thing like a bad habit that should be quit , like smoking for example. how ever i think that in my case it gives me a sense of relief and puts me at ease no matter the situation. if people consider that a bad habit, they should mind their own business. it's not causing any one else any harm and not breaking any laws so why should it matter? :)

Im so shocked that it's a habit of so many other people. Twirling my hair makes me feel relaxed, like when im in deep thought or trying to feel more at ease with someone i dont really know, i never had a problem before i got with my bf. Hes recently told me that most of his friends think i fancy them because i twirl my hair a lot around them. This is not the case; my boyfriends friends are no people id circulate with myself and find their conversations quite tiresom. I need to stop this hair twirling before it lands me in trouble :(
