Abstract:
From the get-go, I was not a huge supporter of the calendars. I really became infuriated about the topic when the creators and their supporters started making gratuitous, inaccurate and disrespectful comments regarding their "work."...
Great article Ryan. Especially the part about having kids with cancer make pictures or something similiar. Kudos!
This is just a way for some guys to make money off the objectification of women. It would be about the same as if the creator of "girls Gone wild" donated a few bucks to breast cancer research. It is just a way for a loser to make his "business" look legitimate when all he is selling is crap. This calendar is crap. I'll give $10 to St. Jude's instead. That is a great suggestion and I can be sure that the money is going to something worthwhile. I can't believer the calendar company tricked this many girls into posing. Shame on all of them.
It would be sleezy of some guys on campus to create a calendar to make money and give some money away to make the business look legit. However that isn't the case. All of the money being rasied is donated to the American Cancer Society and not a penny is seen by the members or models involved.
Alright, I won't take anymore of this. As a person who is involved with the making of this calendar, I object to many of the things said in this article.
First of all, I am sorry that you had to go through cancer and had to deal with the pain and agony, as well as your parents. It's not a fun thing to go through, and it's not something that I would wish on anyone in this world.
Second, as stated before... none of the money that is gained by this calendar is profiting anyone involved with the making of it. All... and I mean ALL, of the proceeds are going to the American Cancer Society, please get that fact straight.
Third...Ryan, you talk about us making a generalization. Just because you had cancer, does that mean you can speak for all people who have or had cancer?? I hate to break your bubble, but I have many in my family who are battling cancer- breast, throat, lung, prostate, and colon... and who are firmly on board with this. To make your argument have more holes in it, many of their friends who also are battling cancer have said they are very happy with the calendar... many of whom (men and women) who have purchased it from me. I have not had cancer, but I have seen first hand what it does to a body. I felt helpless, and when this came along, that is why I decided to be involved with it. I hate to say it, but many who are battling, and their families are proud of us for doing something to help their cause.
Lastly, Many employers will see this in very good light. Creating something from nothing, use of communication, dealing with adversity - skills many employers see as great skills to have.
you say you don't like generalizations, but yet you created some of the largest there is. You used many emotional claims in your article, but not a lot of facts. That's the problem with most news reporting now a days. Use the information to fill your claim, and not be fair to both sides. No wonder many (generalization included) hate most of the media, including the poor writing and arguments of the Spectator.
I don't get it? If you don't like the idea of a calendar then don't buy it. Personally I'm not into the whole calendar pin-up girl thing so I wouldn't get one, but why not let people help in a way that is legal and something they want to do? There are no false claims to the models or about where the money goes, so why get so mad about it? People should and do have the right to have different views on how to do things like a calendar that raises money to fight cancer.
Calendar is bad- Ryan is right
