Race determines bake sale prices

Abstract:
In the aftermath of the UW Board of Regents' unanimous approval of its admissions policy Feb. 9, some state lawmakers have vowed to keep the issue alive - an issue which has now sparked controversy among students themselves.
On Monday, members of UW-Eau Claire's College Republicans held a bake sale in protest of the new policy, charging customers different prices based on their race in order to bring attention to what they called an unfair policy and an attempt to force diversity upon the university....

I finding it entirely IRONIC that the funds form the bake sale with College Republicans is going to the United Negro fund. Sophomore Michelle Voight should be embarassed and stricken of her title for stating such an ignorant and self righteous comment. "An African American from Milwaukee doesn't bring different experiences than I do." Oh really? I beg to know when was the last time Ms. Voight lived a day as a black man and can tell about it. If I were the United Negro Fund, I'd say, "thanks, but no thanks," to their donation.

The bake sale is a very creative and effective way to convey the results of this well intentioned but flawed policy. Well done! sj

It needs to be noted that there were some terrible misquotes in this article. First, Michelle Voigt's supposed quote that seems to have caused a bit of a ruckus was that, "An African American from Milwaukee doesn't bring different experiences than I do." Which by itself seems like a very racist comment, but it's taken grossly out of context. Michelle was talking about how she brings as many different experiences as "An African American from Milwaukee", and how there is no way to determine which is better. I believe the quote would have been more accurate if it had said, "An African American from Milwaukee doesn't bring BETTER experiences than I do."

Second, I was quoted as saying that we need a "solid, subjective policy." While clearly this is just incorrect, I'm certain I said OBjective. And even if I slipped up and said subjective it's clear that I meant objective.

It just irks me that Nat Shuda would decide to print some of what he did while not explaining the conversation that was taking place. He was there for nearly the entire bake sale and was randomly scribbling down notes when we were talking to people, not just when he asked us questions. Perhaps The Spectator should invest in a recorder so there's proof that the quotes in an article are accurate.

Finally, this bake sale has little to nothing to do with the College Republicans. Though you can't see it from the pictures in the article, it didn't say "College Republicans" on any sign that we put up on the booth. This is not a partisan political issue as some have been trying to make it, this is an issue of morality and law. Is it moral and legal to discriminate based on race in the admissions policy? We think not, and those we talked to agreed by a vast majority.

Perfectly good way to bring attention to the unfair policies of the university. Race-based admissions does nothing but perpetuate racism. If you grant benefits to a particular race, you are by default practicing racism, and discriminating against all other races.

I seem to recall hearing that ISCRIMINATION ON ACCOUNT OF RACE was against THE CONSTITUTION or somethin' like that.
