Senate should consider student's input on ROTC program

Abstract:
I was shocked when I read the recent column about the new trial run of an Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program that will be coming to UW-Eau Claire next year. The part I was shocked about was that there is a campus group called Staff and Faculty for Peace and Justice that is actually against this idea....

As a point of information, the University Senate which is composed of Faculty and Academic Staff will be the primary governance body on campus that will be dealing the the ROTC issue in the up-coming year.

Students (and Student Senate) will as always be a key constituent in the process, however the Student Senate will not be the primary decision makers for an issue that is primarily related to instruction on campus. This is just my interpretation of how the process may happen.

I would suggest anyone who is interested in the issue and would like to be involved, attend University Senate meetings (Tuesday at 3 pm in the the Tamarack room) next year.

Jared says this "today's Army isn't the Army of the Clinton era." And yet yesterday Lieutenant Dan Choi of the New York Army National Guard was discharged for being gay. His letter from the Army read in part: "Specifically, you admitted publicly that you are a homosexual, which constitutes homosexual conduct."

In dismissing Lt. Choi, the Army lost a West Point graduate, an Arabic linguist, and a seasoned leader and combat veteran with service in Iraq.

All he did was "tell" - how is the response of the Army now different from the Clinton era?

Kate-
Well you got me on that one story. The only real difference from the Clinton Era and today is that Lieutenant had actually served in a combat zone and they still kicked him out of the army. This shouldn't be the real issue though. I want to know how an ROTC program is going to hurt our university????? So does anyone have a real comment that isn't fueled by pent up emotions to add to this?

But this is a real issue. As our university strives to become more inclusive, how do we add a program that is closed to some students based on their sexuality? Perhaps "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will be abolished, but until then it remains as a major obstacle between ROTC and this university's goals of equity and inclusivity.

It's good to see that people are paying attention! Thank you for your service, sir, and thank you for speaking out, especially as a member of the military.
