Golfing at the St. Thomas Invitational was an opportunity for the UW-Eau Claire women's golf team to compete against a number of the top-ranked teams in the country, including No. 1 ranked Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) and No. 3 ranked UW-Stevens Point.

Head coach John Means said this was an opportunity for the team.

"Our goal was to go there and beat one (Gustavus) or three (Stevens Point) or both," he said.

The UW-Eau Claire Women's Golf team traveled to Minnesota over the weekend to compete in the St. Thomas Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

However, after the two-day invitational, the Blugolds were unable to do so, placing third behind first-place Gustavus Adolphus and second-place Stout, Means said.

During the first day of competition, the women placed fourth overall with 336 strokes, 28 strokes behind Gustavus. Stevens Point took second with 323 and the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) shot 329.

Means said the team got off to a slow start on Saturday.

"The girls played tentative … they played like they were a little bit scared, which is kind of typical when you have a very young team," he said.

This is one thing Means said the team has worked to eliminate but hasn't overcome yet. Five team members played at St. Thomas this weekend, three of which are freshman.

Means said on Sunday, the team relaxed and shot better. However, Means has hope for the team for the future.

"I'll take a couple of holes each time," he said. "If we can stand up … and be proud for a couple of additional holes each time by the time this season's over, we'll have this thing whipped."
