The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team held off a late rally from UW-River Falls to come away with a 5-2 win on Saturday.
Coming out fast, the Blugolds were able to find the net twice in the first ten minutes.
"This team, there is something about them. We start out really strong, it's just a matter of sustaining that," head coach Sean Yengo said.
The goal scoring started in the 6th minute on a shot from freshman Shyla Gilbertson that was assisted by senior Sam Krueger. Gilbertson, who has four goals on the year, leads the team in goals scored.
"Sam Krueger got the ball on the wing and crossed it in," Gilbertson said. "I saw it coming through an open space and got a foot on it and it went in the corner."
Just three minutes later freshman Katie Richter added to the lead with the first goal of her collegiate career. Richter had an open shot that the opposing goalkeeper was able to save but not hold on to. A River Falls player tried to clear it, but ended up setting Richter up for another shot, and this time she was able to find the back of the net.
Eau Claire continued to put pressure on offense and came within inches of increasing their lead several times over the next thirty minutes.
Finally, in the 38th minute, freshman Emily Alsheskie tacked on another goal and the Blugolds increased their lead to three. The River Falls goalie seemed to misjudge the shot which appeared to be going wide of the net, but ended up hitting the post and falling in. The goal was also the first of Alsheskie's collegiate career.
Initially after halftime Eau Claire looked good and got a fourth goal on a shot from Senior Allis Kishaba. Kishaba headed down a clearance from River Falls and calmly placed the ball in the far upper corner.
Following the goal the Blugolds seemed to lose momentum and River Falls got right back into the game. Eau Claire only had 16 of 25 players healthy enough to play, and fatigue may have started to become a factor.
