“Oops, that was your foot wasn’t it?”

This was the typical phrase I found myself whispering to my boyfriend Rick most of Friday night at the Viennese Ball.

Realizing how terrible I am at dancing; I made the most of my night in other ways, such as gorging on chocolate cake, reaching a whole new level of my people-watching-game, learning to appreciate music in a new way and enjoying a new experience.

Thanks to a best friend from home I was able to attend the event with a dress free of charge. Oh, the wonders of shopping in your friend’s closet. It allowed me to spend my money on much more exciting realms … food.

All in all, this event is a must for any college student. If you’re graduating soon, come back as an alum. If you are an underclassmen, attend next year. If you’re a human, go to the UW-Eau Claire Viennese Ball during your lifetime.

Friday night at the Viennese Ball began with a tale of two deer.

Or rather, a tale of four deer – that’s how many I saw roaming about neighborhood lawns on my way to the Davies Center as a strawberry-wine-and-robin’s-egg-blue sky expanded behind them.

Call me superstitious, but I’ve always considered deer a positive omen. In my mind, they cast a carefree and youthful tone on my last – and only -– night at V-Ball.

If I had to condense the evening into a word, I’d say it was weightless.

I spent the evening flitting barefoot from room to room, pausing only for the occasional bite of crepe or to adjust the length of my dress. I danced, I laughed and I tripped over my feet.  But therein lies the beauty of V-Ball: You can be a terrible dancer and still have fun.

To those who’ve never been interested, there’s always time to change your mind. I highly recommend you do.

As someone who attended both nights, I now understand why this is two days long. The weekend went by so quickly that I could hardly get in everything I wanted to see.

I spent the first night painting and handling The Player’s statues that I took to different locations around Davies and got to see all the faces, laughs and pictures people want with them. It’s always great seeing people try to make them smile.

The next night was filled with a lot more waltzing, cake-gawking, picture-taking and of course, statue selfies.

Everywhere you went in that building there was always someone playing something cool. Whether it was a concert in the Woodland Theater, the increasingly drunken polka band or the entirety of the Statesman singing Piano Man, no one disappointed.

There is actually no other event this campus provides that lives up to the greatness that is V-Ball. No where else can you find such a high quality weekend event that also offers that many mini eclairs in their midnight breakfast, and I think that’s really special.
